Get your pupils analysing the characters from The Twits using these differentiated FAST activities. These resources enable pupils to carry out a detailed character analysis. Using the F.A.S.T. technique, pupils will examine the Feelings, Actions, Sayings and Thoughts of Mr and Mrs Twit and other characters from Roald Dahl’s popular novel The Twits to gain an insight into the characters and develop inference skills. Pupils will look at the following categories: F = Feelings: How does the character feel? A = Actions: What does the character do? S = Sayings: What does the character say? T = Thoughts: What does the character think? One text is written from the point of view of Hogarth and the other from the perspective of Hogarth’s mother. Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences. There are two activities provided: Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of colon usage; add missing colons to sentences and write sentences using colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. An example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the Beowulf retelling by Michael Morpurgo plus accompanying resources. The differentiated WAGOLL contains a conversation between Beowulf, his father, Edgetheow, and his uncle, King Hygelac, when he decides to travel to Denmark to kill Grendel. It is based on a part of the story containing no direct speech. Differentiated feature find sheets with answers and word bank are also included.
